Question:

What are the right steps to get into college!?

I went to college for two years on a baseball scholarship, and now ive been out of school for three years, and have no scholarship to fall back on.

I want to continue my schooling in my major, and get a medical degree.

Only problem is i have no idea how this all works, and some help or guidance would be great!

basically my question falls within these parameters:

~assume i have next to no money (because i dont)

~no parents to pay for school (because they cant)

So how would i go about setting up a plan to go finish school, and being able to afford it without much money. Loans are Ok, as long as i wouldnt have to pay them until after med. school.

Im sure this is what i want to do, any suggestions on the best way to approach this is?!

  1. Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind:

    1. You can apply for low interest government loans. If you qualify for subsidized loans you won't have to pay interest on them until you are out of school entirely, including medical school! These subsidized loans can be difficult to get, so you may end up getting an unsubsidized loan. On unsubsidized loans, the interest will accumulate while you're in school but you won't have to make any payments until you're out of school. If you just pay off the interest every year while you're in school with a part time job you can avoid the compounding that will happen for the next few years you're in school. You'll need to fill out a FAFSA to qualify: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

    2. Avoid non-federal funding if you can. Private loans tend to have the highest interest rates so try to get government loans first.

    3. Talk to your school's financial aid office. They will be able to point you to specific options for that school. Some schools will offer grants, scholarships, or work-study programs to help you pay for the cost of attendance. These are specific to the school though so you'll need to talk to the financial aid office at your college.

    Good luck!

  2. Get good grades and apply for fafsa.gov to see if you are eligible for any government funding such as loans, scholarships, or grants.
