Question:

What are the rules about what you can write to someone in jail?

I got a call today from a girl who's been dating the same guy I have been. They've been together for a very long time, apparently, and she just found out about me. He was arrested Monday and I haven't been able to talk to him yet so I immediately penned an angry letter after I got off the phone.

I regret writing and mailing the letter when I was angry, but now I'm worried about the content. I know I used the word "a*****e," but I can't remember if I used stronger language... And I may have ended it by saying something like "Have fun rotting in jail alone."

Now I'm worried that I'll get in trouble over it -- surely you're not supposed to send inflammatory mail to an inmate?

Will there be repercussions? Or is the letter ok?

  1. The cussing isn't what they look for.  They are looking for anything that indicates you might be helping him escape, or do anything else illegal.

    The letter is fine.

Edit: Nope, they won't care if it's an angry letter.  They'll still give it to him.  If he chooses to hit someone, thus resulting in a good beating for him, it's his own fault, not yours.  Him getting beaten up may well teach him a well earned lesson, anyway.  No more worrying about him, and sleep well.
