There are many variations of pool, billiards, snooker and table games.  There are league rules, bar rules, and sometimes even regional rules.  The best way is to learn from someone who plays the same kind of pool that you are trying to learn.  Once you learn the fundamentals of the game, then concentrate on the exact rules.  Have Fun!!!

well in the pool i always play (billiards)  there are four kinds of balls: solids, stripes, the 8 ball, and the cue ball.  NEVER hit the 8 ball in unless you have all of your type of ball (solids or stripes) in the pockets.  there is one in each corner and two on the sides in the middle.  if you shoot the 8 ball in without getting all your balls in then you lose.

if you can not get a ball in then at least try to do that to your opponent.  you want to use a stick thats easy for you to use.  if you miss the ball then its the other persons turn.  but if you get it in then you get another shot.  but dont get wild.  if you do you will probably make bonehead mistakes.  if you start off the game then shoot at the little gaps between balls like between the #1 ball and the ball behind that on either side.  you can't move any of the balls PERIOD!!!  if you try to cheat with anyone you will probably (60% chance)  die or be seriously wounded.  just trust me.

you may lean over the table to shoot but if you move a ball you must put it back.  

in 8 ball there is only four balls but that is a speed game same rules except you are by yourself. it is a tournament but the thing thats different is your time counts, not the amount of balls you get in the pockets.

i just want to add that the most popular pool games in TV such as ESPN, is 9 ball game. It was develop from 8 ball game that has bee explained by others. Try to watch 9 ball game so you will get to know and feel different excitement of pool.

There is a diffenrence between billiards and snooker. The "pool" you are referring to is most likely a game called "8-Ball"

Read the rules the other person provided in their answer.  If you enjoy pool, even if you are just starting out, you should join the APA/CPA and get out there and have some fun with other people who love to play.
