OK so you pick up a few gallons of gas or diesel in a gas can and take it home for the equipment at home or your boat. No problem here. Now what if you pick up fuel in 3 or 4 gas cans at once? At what point are you breaking the rules to transport in your car? Is that a DOT thing or a state by state set of rules?

  1. You can only put the gas in approved containers, but you can transport it in your car but best to check on the particular laws in your state to see if there is a limit on the amount that can be transported at one time- do not do like the couple did that stockpiled gas in 5 gallon containers and stored it in their closet and burned the house down.

  2. dot but you should not go over a1000 lbs. 4 gas cans should be fine as long as they are dot approved

  3. I have also heard if you use the wrong type of container they can fine you...I.E. using a yellow can to put gas in (yellow should be diesel)
