  2. It depends on whether you are talking junior high and high school, club, college, beach, or international.  They are very similar, but not the same.  The US likes to have different sets of rules for each different group.  

    Since most questions in this group concern the US junior high and high school rules, I will address those rules.  They are the NFSHSA rules.

    Maximum of 3 hits on a side with the block not counting as a hit.

    No contact with the net.  No crossing the centerline.

    No contact below the waist.  Intentional or not.

    The use of a Libero is allowed.  The Libero has a different colored shirt and is allowed to play back row as a defensive specialist.  They are allowed to serve this year in one position.  

    The players may switch front to back and left to right after the serve.  However, only the front row players may block or attack the ball when they are in the front row.  (There are other details that have to be met.)
