  1. get in sit down and shut up and paddle, no really what are you talking about trust few and paddle your own canoe.

  2. Rules can be regulations or recommended procedures that are not law.

Regulations are often set by the international rules of the sea, but can vary from local to local.

Regulations that are likely to apply to a canoe:

    1.  Will require registration in many states but not all.

    2.  In most area, all occupants will be required to have a PFD.  In many areas, it is requied that the PFD properly fit each person.

    3.  Boats are not to exceed capacity.  In some areas, one must display the capacity on the stern.

    4.  At night, one probably needs a white light, to make oneself visible to other boaters.   Rarely running lights may be required.  (I actually had someone try to ticket me in a canoe for not having running lights)

    5.  One must obey the rules of the road/ right of way policies which may include things such as staying out of swim areas, staying away from dive flags, not interfeering with boats at anchor or drifting, etc.

Sugested protocals will vary depending on condtiions, but may include:

Wearing a pfd that fits, especially if you are not a strong swimmer, the water is moving or cold.

Wearing a helmet if paddeling white water

Using appropriate flotation if paddeling in white water

Wearing a wet or dry suit if condtiions indicate

Carrying apprpriate emergency gear including warm clothing, first aid kit, etc.

    Carrying a spare paddle.

  3. 3 golden rules:

-always wear a BA and Helmet

    -never paddle alone

-always tell someone when and where your paddling and don't paddle after dusk

    then i suppose:

-grip the paddle with your right hand... twist with your left (righty tighty, lefty loosey)

-lift your upstream edge and lean slightly forward on drops.

-bring a harness, first aid kit, watch, repair kit.

-prepair an agreed sset of signals before going on the water. (the standard ones are: a vertical paddle means GO, a horizontal paddle means STOP, and two arms crossed to form an X means GET OFF THE WATER)

    -alwaysmaintain line of sight

  4. 1. Be safe.

    2. Have fun.

Those are really the only rules.

Or are you referring to specific types of canoeing competition? For slalom, the following page has a good overview of the rules:

  5. This is a philosophical question. I suggest the number one rule is: Paddle Your Own Canoe.  This means, you must know your ability, you need to know the water you will be paddling and that you are using gear and a boat equal to or better than the water conditions.

    We told our students;

    Lean downstream.

    Get out of cold water.

    Wear a PFD.

Another rule...Canoe in groups of three.

Many deaths can be charged to alcohol and ignorance. Hence, no alcohol and take lessons.
