What are the rules of volleyball and how can I get onto the team?

Volleyball at my middle school is not a major sport where I live, yet there is a pretty strong team. This summer I will be going to a camp where I will be taking volleyball lessons an hour and a half a day, but I am not too familiar with the rules and don't know how I can get onto the team. Can you help me by

a) stating the rules of volleyball and

b) teaching me some drills/exercises that will help me on the team.

Also, I play squash and some tennis, and I used to play basketball. Will these help with my hand-eye coordination?

  1. ok, lol the rules can be easily looked up on google. There is a lot of rules. too many tolist all on here. And the camp u will go to will also break them down. There is no for sure thing on making the team but all i can say is try your  best and use youe new skills you might learn. Some drills are:

Practice your jumps on a wall and see how high your hit jumps are

Lay on the ground and keep setting the ball up

and regular exersises are great for it.

    Runnung is also great

running will make your thighs and legs stronger which will help you jump and get dow faster.

I love volleyball and i used to be like you lol

and now its my main sport

    i hoped i helped :]

    good luck!

( C ) Ball must be clearly visible to opponents before serve.

( D ) Served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for point.

( E ) First game serve is determined by a volley, each subsequent game shall be served by the previous game loser.

( A ) Maximum of three hits per side.

( B ) Player may not hit the ball twice in succession ( A block is not considered a hit ).

( C ) Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve.

    ( D ) A ball touching a boundary line is good.

( E ) A legal hit is contact with the ball by a player body above and including the waist which does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest.

( F ) If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and the players involved may not participate in the next play.

    ( G ) A player must not block or attack a serve.

( H ) Switching positions will be allowed only between front line players. ( After the serve only ).

  3. I used to play pretty much every sport (soccer, basketball, softball, & fieldhockey) & they all helped me in volleyball in one way or another.  The most important thing is stamina and core strength, which involves your abs and allows you to balance, put up effective blocks, and get power behind serves and spikes.  Focus on ab workouts.  Also be sure to do pushups and strengthen your arms and legs (planks & crunches).  Running a mile 3 times a week can help you get into shape.  Plyometric drill will help you.  The involve various drill such as sprinting, jumping over cone for alotted amounts of time, fast footwork (like the ladder drills you see football players do in gatorade commercials).

As for rules their pretty basic: you can't touch the ball twice in a row. (if you touch it someone else has to touch it before you can touch it again. If you don't  follow this rule refs call a 2-touch and the other team gets a point).  That said, a team is only allowed to have 3 touches on a ball.  Once the 3rd contact is  made the ball must go over the net.  Once a ball hits the ground on any side of the net the play is considered dead and one team gets a point.  The court has lines around it as well as an antenna the ball must ne played in this area.  For example if team 1 hits the ball into the antenna it is automatically considered out and team 2 gets a point.  If team 1 is serving or hitting the ball and it goes outside the lines team 2 gets a point.  However if team 2 touches the ball before it goes out of bounds and hits the ground team 1 gets the point.  Hmm...what else. oh, your not allowed to go under the net and interfere with the other teams play.  For example if you land wrong and step under the net causing  an opposing player to mess up a play they get the point. Next, players in the backrow anre not permitted to spike the ball above the 10 ft. line.  If setters wish to set a back row player and conduct a "backrow attack" they must place the ball off the net so that the backroaw player can jump before the 10ft line.  The same thing occurs with serving, if you're seerving and you set on/over the base line on the court the other team gets a point.  You also can't lift the ball in volelyball, this is where in attempting to pass the ball you kind of hold it (so it kind of sits in your hands) and push it back in the air.  There are other rules but their nearly impossible for me to explain at a computer because they involve rotation, which is the order of  the players on the court so I'd suggest asking an experienced player or coach.  But i'm  sre you'll learn all of this at camp.  Try and watch a volleyball game online, on tv, or locally the rules are easy to pick up on.  Just pay attention to the refs and the players.
