  1. It depends on what laboratory apparatus/equipment you're working with...I guess you read manuals first before proceeding the work...

  2. (1)  Make sure your equipment is functioning properly.

    (2)  You must have at least 2 exits 24/7 open from the lab.

    (3)  4 fire extinguishers easy to find, labeled as such and verified.

    (4)  If you work with special product, you must have the proper extinguisher that goes with it.

    (5) For gas, the lab must be properly ventilated and must have an oxygen tank with a mask.

    (6) You must have a special fountain for the eyes, this is for toxic products in the eyes. The fountain is located next to the lab.

    (7) You must have a shower with no door, so it cannot be locked,it will sprinkle cold water on the person with the press of a button. The shower is located next to the lab.

    (8) Of course wear lab glasses.

    (9) If you work with high temperatures, you must wear a special mask and gloves.

    (10) Do not work alone.

-- The lab must have a protection system that works: sprinklers, doors, hoses, ...

-- Rehearse an emergency:  it will iron out the bugs in the safety procedures.

PS I do not cover medical research labs, where researchers and technicians work with viruses and bacteria.  This situation requires special construction, like corridor showers, negative pressure room, and  additional safety features.
