Every now and then I take 2 capsules at bedtime to help me sleep, what are some side effects of taking valerian root, besides feeling very sleepy the day after?

  1. No side effects have presented themselves during my  4 years of its use for muscle &trigger point spasm due to fibromyalgia.  It's actually been somewhat of a miracle drug for me after being on heavy narcotics for many years.  Sleep is still not sound or refreshing, but melatonin helps with that occasionally.

  2. It keeps most people relax, or drowsy....which that is the effect of it. WHen I used it....waking up in the morning gave me a headache, so I stop using it.

  3. I use Valerian root for my very anxious horse before we go to intense events.  The vet recommended it because it is so safe and had no side effects except making her very mellow.  I would assume the same goes for humans.  She is able to  still get her job done it just takes off the edge.

  4. Well, since Valerian root can act as a diuretic, people who tend to wake during the night to urinate may not find it effective as a sleep aid. Though side effects are rare, some people who use Valerian root for long periods of time may develop headaches, insomnia or agitation.

Though this may seem paradoxical, the same side effect is often noted with prescription sleep aids and anti-anxiety medications if they are over-used.

Valerian root should be used conservatively to treat symptoms of anxiety and insomnia, and it should not be discontinued suddenly. Because of possible negative interaction with barbiturates and benzodiazepines such as Ativan, Valium, and Xanax, people taking these medications should not use Valerian root.

  5. I have taken it for years and never had any side effects, I do not feel sleepy the next day which is why I take it

  6. None. Valerian has been used safely for 1000 years

  7. If you use it for long periods of time it can cause headaches, insomnia (yes, this is true), and agitation.
