  1. Regarding hurricanes:

Fortunately, with a hurricane, you get lots of advance warning, and you have days to prepare.

Characteristics of an approaching hurricane are:

Your area will be placed under a "Hurricane Watch". This means that hurricane conditions could come in 36 to 48 hours. At this time, it will be sunny and not too many clouds in the sky.

If a hurricane comes close to your area, you will be placed under a "Hurricane Warning". It will be sunny with maybe a few light showers. The wind will reverse direction and start to blow towards the hurricane.

As the first rain bands hit your area, you will experience very rough weather: high winds, and squally rain...and then sun!

This will deteriorate fairly rapidly, with more and more rain and winds as the storm approaches. If you live near water, you will experience higher waves and flooding.

Once the hurricane hits, it's chaos and pandemonium for HOURS on end. A category 4 storm can last 12 or more hours. Severe flooding and wind damage ensues.

After the hurricane passes, it's very hot and humid as the winds will blow from the south. This is why evacuating from a hurricane is strongly recommended.

    Regarding tornadoes:

Unlike hurricanes, tornadoes can drop out of the sky with little warning. But there are some things to look for.

If your area is placed under a "Tornado Watch", it means that conditions are favorable for tornadoes. A "Tornado Warning" means that a tornado is already on the ground and you need to seek shelter immediately!

A lot of variables have to come together for a tornado to form, but be wary of any storm that produces hail. Hail sometimes preceeds a tornado. Look for rotation in the bottom portion of a storm cloud. This is called a "mesocyclone" and it will kinda look like the storm cloud is growing an udder. (To me, at least...) If you see a rotating mesocyclone, take shelter!

    Hope this helps.
