Please avoid "IDK" answers, or answers that are dogmatic. I am interested in opinions about actual social data.

  1. As a previous poster indicated, humans (by and large males) are not by nature monogamous creatures - it makes more sense in survival terms to "spread the seed" diversely.  However, monogamy has now been tied to social, religious and legal norms, and as a result, has negative connotations.  This is bound to cause problems with such a conflict.  Many people likely abstain from seeking multiple partners for social reasons, but with greater interpersonal mobility, more people are likely to meet multiple compatible partners - and thus resulting in emotional affairs, and increased numbers of websites for married people looking for fun.

  2. society is more focused on "what's in it for me"... so the prob. with monogamy on a societal level is that it rules out the opportunity of ever getting someone who's "better".

  3. In a monogamous society, it is impossible not to be attracted to someone other than who you are with. This causes jealousy and contempt.

  4. idk

  5. 1. Prostitution

    2. Domestic Violence

    3. Sexual Inequality

    4.Mental Stress

  6. "we are animals ...just ones that were clothes"

Humans are also the only animals that can change the form of their society at will.  Ants and bees will always be a monarchy, wolves will always have a pack, but humans can choose to live in anything from communism to anarchy.

"humans (by and large males) are not by nature monogamous creatures "

This argument fails to take into account that the more patriarchial a society is (that is to say, the more it is ruled by males) the more it enforces strict rules of monogamy and fidelity.  If it were natural for men to be polygamous, then societies ruled by men would be more polygamous, not less.

"It makes more sense in survival terms to "spread the seed" diversely. However, monogamy has now been tied to social, religious and legal norms, and as a result, has negative connotations. This is bound to cause problems with such a conflict."

If monogamy is against nature and natural selection, then why is it so popular among many species in the animal kingdom (especially mammals)?  Do animals also have social norms that prohibit them from acting naturally?

People who claim that monogamy is unnatural often point to so-called "primitive" cultures that do not practice monogamy and use them as evidence to back up their claim.  However many "primitive" cultures practice monogamy.

So who is to say who is primitive (or "natural") and who is not?  Or are you saying that anything other than the free love of the 20th and 21st centuries is unnatural?  If so, then try not to be so dogmatic.

  7. monogamy is the problem all together...humans were not made to be monogamist......that's why we have divorce rates that are high...people are not suppose to get married...and be together forever...we are animals ...just ones that were clothes
