  1. Also perspective needs to be taken into account. Society of 25 years ago is so different than today, as it was 100 years ago. Today society is as closed minded as ever, yet paradoxically it is also very loose and anything goes any more. Generation after generation struggles to shock that of their parent's to the point of its getting frightening! How does this affect individuality? Well it puts the stamp of approval on being obnoxious and claiming individuality, it segregates groups as everyone is fighting for their right to stand out and retain ethnic backgrounds. Then society turns right around and stifles individuality with the threat of political correctness. It is okay to have an opinion, just be ready to be sued for speaking it out loud.

  2. Well for one it is proven that we are the products of our society and culture.  Since birth we are raised by society's standards as seen by our parents, school also has a huge factor in sociolizing us as it is our first attempts at forming our own relationships with other outside the family unit.  Honestly I would have to say that there really isn't much individualism in the world.  Sure there are a select few people who are actually unique, but honestly there are probably like 5 plans of the human personality and we all fit into one of them, led there by society and culture.  So, society and culture kills individuality because as there is someone  out there just like me there is someone out there just like you, and probably more than just one, theres probably dozens or even hundreds of people with the same experiences and gew to be the same person.  That's how society effects individualism.

  3. Being different in our society is difficult and lonely. If a person doesn't want to conform, she is thought of as odd. People get nervous around others who have different opinions and objectives.

In some cases, it is better to please yourself than conform.
