  1. The breakdown we had back in high school was as follows:

    1) Chemistry - Looking at interactions between chemical elements.  Applied fields would include pharmacology, chemical engineering.

    2) Biology - The "life sciences" - looking at living things (plants, animals).  Applied fields would be the environmental sciences, neurology, etc.

    3) Physics - Examining the forces of gravity, magnetism, etc.  Civil/Mech/Elec engineering would fall here in terms of applications to real life.

    You could theoretically include the "social sciences" (sociology, psychology) to that list if you wanted, but they're not really seen as pure sciences.  

    Mathematics might also be included, though it's really a system of understanding more than a science that can be applied.
