  1. I think you are referring to the Demonstration Sport that used to be included in Olympics??  If so then I am afraid demonstration sport is no longer in the programme.  They ceased adding demonstration sports after the 1992 games.  So I am not sure where you got the ballroom dancing for Sydney from.

    Here is a quote from an IOC article with the link below,

    In the past – demonstration sports

    Thanks to their popularity, the Games have been able to showcase some lesser known sports, which up to 1992 were included as demonstration sports alongside the official Olympic programme.

    For example:

    – Australian football, a national sport, at the Melbourne Games in 1956;

    – bowling, a sport little known in the host country of Korea, at the Seoul Games

    in 1988;

    – at the Barcelona Games in 1992, the local sport of Basque pelota, as well as roller hockey and taekwondo.

    I hope this was what you were asking.

    However China is hosting a Wushu Tournament Beijing 2008 during the Games but they are not calling it a demonstration sport.  See http://en.beijing2008.cn/news/official/p...

  2. Pretty sure they don't have demonstration sports anymore.  There is now a set list of sports with room for a couple more if the IOC majority vote them in.

  3. It seems the removed the demonstration sports after the 1996 olympics.

    There is now only 25 core sports which must be at each olympics and 3 extra sports so there there are no more than 28 sports at each olympics.

    These are voted on by the IOC Session and the programme of a particular Olympics must be decided no later then the meeting that they decide on the host for that Olympics.

    So the host isn't known before they finalise the programme, or at least the programme and host are decided at the same time.

  4. China doesn't select them, it's the International Olympic Commitee.

    Archery • Athletics • Badminton • Baseball • Basketball • Boxing • Canoeing • Cycling • Diving • Equestrian • Fencing • Football • Gymnastics • Handball • Hockey • Judo • Modern pentathlon • Rowing • Sailing • Shooting • Softball • Swimming • Synchronized swimming • Table tennis • Taekwondo • Tennis • Triathlon • Volleyball • Water polo • Weightlifting • Wrestling

  5. the International Olympic committee (IOC) select the events, but since China is the host country all their teams automatic are qualified for every event

  6. i am wondering that too.
