  1. The law was changed earlier this month. If you are a Mexican citizen, you can nationalize a car that is exactly 10 years old. Not 9, not 11. That means a 1998 only. If you are a US citizen, forget it.

  2. These laws are always changing.

    You can pay the importation tax. They will give you the papers and you can sell in Mexico legally .

    If you are not going to sell it it makes no sense to pay the tax.

    You will , however have to take it out after the 6 month permit expires.

    If you are a temporary resident (FM3) or get one while your car is here the immigration will scrape the permit off and register it on you FM3.  You are free to insure it and never have to worry about the plate again;

    If for some reason you want to plate it locally all you have to do is pay (La Hacienda) Now called (FISCAL)

    You can go back and forth but renewal is , of course required in USA

    It is simply a matter of paying the TAX

    My neighbor brought a van from Minnesota He paid $800,00 in tax and made about $1000.00 but I think that profit was offset by expenses

    Ilooked at a friend of mines plate recenly and the 1986 sticker is still on the plate.

    Legalizing a car in Mexico  Thumbs down

    Gringo

  3. This is an extremely difficult subject to get information on.  It has been asked here several times and I have never seen a really good answer to it.  I have spent a lot of time on the web searching for the info...and only recently found one article.  I know the car must be 10 years old.  If you are an American citizen, you cannot nationalize your American car here until you have an FM2 visa.  You must use a Mexican car "broker" for the process.  If you are an American citizen, living in Mexico, you do not need to legalize your car, and it is actually better if you don't.
