Well, it's a bit much to describe in a few sentences, but get the Marino ICU book.

Select the mode (SIMV), etc.  Get an ABG, here's an example, obtain CXR, start off on SIMV @ FIO2 100%, repeat ABG in 2 hours, determine what acid/base derangements there are and adjust accordingly, decrease FIO2 to about 50%, and take it from there.  Try not to kill the patient in the process.
