  1. Remove all your furniture first! Otherwise You'll end up having to move it in the process of tearing up the carpet and pad, then when you move the furniture over the pad it will drag it with it, assuming it's a heavy piece like a large dresser.

Tools that you will need on hand are: knife (or something strong to cut through carpet), staple remover - if you don't have this you can use a flat head s***w driver or some pliers. You'll also need something to rip up the carpet tacks - when I did mine I used a chisel for this. Also a hammer because sometimes the tacks rip in half where they're nailed down and you'll need to take those nails out of the floor.

Start with your carpet first, roll it up and tape it and move it out of your way to another room. Then start with the carpet pad and do the same when you're done, roll it up.

Remove any staples left over from the carpet pad, then start ripping up the carpet tacks and any nails left behind.

When everything is moved start vacuuming or sweeping up.

  2. the girls above have the right idea. Cut the carpet into managable strips, but don't forget that there should be tack strips against the walls that need to be removed also. You'll need a hammar and a straight bar. Tack strips are strips of wood with tacks sticking up for the carpet to hold on to when stretched into place.

A crow bar is too heavy a tool in this situation.

  3. Buy a carpet cutting tool.  Starting at one wall and two feet from the side wall, begin a straight cut all the way to the opposite wall.  Be sure to cut through the carpet pad, also.

Roll up the old carpeting and tape with masking tape.  Do the same with the pad.

    Continue another 2 foot strip.

Remember, at wall edge there is a tack strip holding the carpet down.  A crowbar will lift the carpet from that strip without scratching yourself.  The crowbar can also be used to remove the tack strip from the flooring. Put the old carpeting in the waste bin as soon as possible.

  5.   The girls have some good tips.. Just a step further to help you.. Pull carpet back and fold over as far as possible so the backing is exposed..  Then cut  from the backing it ll cut much easier.. Cut in 2 or 3 foot lengths  and roll up into what ever is managable for you.. Tying or duct taping the smaller rolls to prevent unrolling and ease in handling..  Pad will be able to roll the whole 6 foot length just stoping when it s to a managable size.. Floor staples can be scraped up using  a stand up scraper or pounded down depending on what your redoing floor with  GL
