Bottom line...my son's school is NOT working out. My son has been getting E's on his assignments, because his teacher isn't monitoring his work like she should. Basically his assignments are all blank.

We have been trying acommodations for over a year, and they are not helping. I worry because my son is only in 3rd grade and is having so many difficulties.

I contacted this autism school this week which has won a blue ribbon for excellence. all of his doctors rave about this place and i had even seen it mentioned in a book. only problem is, the tuition for the aspergers program is over $50,000 a year. with therapy it's over $80,000 a year.

so...i was told that if all else fails with the public school system and they cannot provide an "appropriate education", they they have to pay for the child to go elsewhere. how does this work though? what are the steps?

i have documented everything over the past year...emails, conversations etc. my son has had countless doctors m

  1. You need to read through your districts procedural safeguards...it is usually given to you at conferences or mailed to you when you are notified of case conferences.  More than likely it will go to a due process hearing.  Keep in mind that even if you win, you do not necessarily get to choose the school that your child will attend (if it is being paid for by the school corp.), chances are they will find another public school setting that has a program specifically for children with autism...they will pay tuition and transportation costs.

Schools are not obligated to pay for the "best" educational setting, they are only obligated to provide an appropriate setting.

  2. I guess your son has an Autism or Aspeger diagnosis. This is the 1st thing you need. If you have it & his school district has been working under its IEP, but it isn't working your school district should look into other programs that fix his needs... I know it's expensive especial education. I have a son with Autism. But, you need to be clear to them and ask for another program with better fix his need. You may mention this school program, but never push the school dist. for this program. Since your son's school district may use it against you. You should call other public school & ask what they are doing, so your school dist may go with another public school instead of a private one... You may search for an advocate in your area to help you to accomodate your petition.... You may have to pay for the advocate if there isn't a free one in your area... Good luck... I know it's very hard to go against to the system...
