  1. Materials

    Pea gravel

    Sand (medium to coarse)

    Sand (fine)

    Tools

Front end loader to remove asphalt

    Vibrating tamper or plate

    Shovel

    Rake

    Level or straightedge

    Heavy shop broom

    Steps

Remove the asphalt and smooth the ground to a depth of 6 inches below grade or the level of the edge of the  drive now.

Lay down 2 to 4 inches of pea gravel to create a sub-bed that will allow water drainage.

cover this with the coarse or medium sand to 1 to 2 inches.  Run the vibrator plate over this to pack the sub-base and to set you a good foundation for your pavers.

Lay out your edge row of pavers measuring it out to insure they will fit according to the pattern you have selected.

Lay in your pavers to cover the entire driveway. You may need to use a diamond blade wet saw if you have curves or irregular areas to fill.  You would then need to cut each paver to fill the voids.

When the entire drive is covered, throw the fine sand over the entire surface as you  sweep on the bias to fill the gaps between the pavers.  Run the vibrator plate over the area as you do this to set the pavers.

If you put the pavers over the asphalt and use a hose to spread your sand you will wash out the sand and never get the pavers to set.  Eventually they will separate and break apart and you will have a terrible mess.

  2. Step1) measure and buy what you need

Step2)Hire illegals to do everything else

  3. You will need to cover the asphalt with an even layer of sand, then you will be able to put paver's down level by adding or removing the sand. When all the paver's are laid level throw sand over the top and wash the sand in with a hose.
