What are the steps necessary to become ATC?

Do you want to go military, CTI or OTS?  Short answer, either do it in the military, get a degree in it or apply right now from the FAA website.  Go to a recruied for the military route, atccti.com for the college route or FAA.gov for the OTS route.

I don't know. I  just don't understand why lots of peebles wanna become ATC.

You sit in a dark room, staring at a video screen full of targets (numbers), and never see the light of day until you go to lunch or go home.

You'd almost have to love hearing the sound of yourself talking...

Added: You are right, it wasn't relevant. I don't understand the way people talk about it as being a great job. Although with the early retirement and all.
