  1. You become a resident the moment you move there for the purpose of living there. However, some institutions (such as collages and universities) have a requirement that you have been a resident for a certain length of time to qualify for residential tuition etc.

You document your residency by registering to vote, getting your drivers license from that state and registering your vehicles in that state.

  2. You would be a resident of New York as soon as you move there.

  3. IF you are a US citizen, you can change your state of residence at any time.  All you have to do is move with the intention of staying there!  Get a place to live, have your mail sent there, go to DMV and change your driver's license, file your state income taxes, etc.

If you want to go to college, you must have been a resident and taxpayer for a minimum of one full year before you are eligible for in-state tuition.

Otherwise, you are a resident when you say you are.  Note you must get your new driver's license within 30 days of moving.  And in the case of New York, remember you will be paying state income taxes -- big difference from Texas!  If you live in NYC, or work in NYC even if you do not live in the city, you must also pay city income taxes.  Hope you are prepared to live in a very high-tax region.

  4. Once you live somewhere your a resident. If you want to get in state tuition or something like that you usually have to pay taxes in that state for 6 month maybe a year. You also have to show mail that you recieved at an address in that state.

  5. It depends on the state.

Some consider you a resident the moment you move there where as some only consider you a resident if you spend more than 6 months of the year living there.
