  1. Have some idea of the kind of house you want. Do some research and look in home magazines to get an idea of what you like. Go green as much as you can to save money and energy. Don't forget long term goals, like 4 bedrooms (for a future family if you don't already have one) instead of 1 or 2 bedrooms. And lastly, find an architect that specializes in residential structures and then find a reputable contractor. Maybe the architect can suggest one. Happy house building. I envy you.

  2. Hire a good reputable General Contractor.

  3. You have asked a very open question. If this is something you want done, then find a custom builder in your area and let him do most of the rest - you just have to make decisions (colors, exteriors, interiors, landscaping, etc) and approve everything.

Start with a budget, and move from there. Always allow for a variable of 20% due to change orders that you decide to do.

If you want to take this on yourself you can research each step of the process, and there are some excellent, and free, sources out there. A good one is www.beyourowncontractor.com It allows for you to figure out each step, and know the process, as well as giving you the opportunity to do any of the steps that are involved.

I always recommend using a contractor since all of the mistakes you are going to make on your own would be eliminated.  You ensure that it is done right the first time, as long as you carefully check references. Good luck, and if there is something I can do further to help please let me know.

  4. buy some land, big a hole, form a foundation, build the walls, put on the roof, install the windows and doors, put in the plumbing and wiring, sheetrock the walls, paint the walls and ceilings, put down the carpeting and finish floors, pit it the fixtures and sinks, move in

  5. Find home plans that you love.

    Find a location you love.

Review if the house is buidable on said lot.

Interview many contractors who can build the house, follow your gut, and do your homework researching their work completion histories.

Spell out EVERY detail in writing, no detail is too minor.

Don't deviate from the origional plans.

Leave 10% of your budgeted money for "oh we forgot about......".

    Good Luck

There are many books out there.

    BUILD GREEN!

  6. Wtell you basically need land to build on then you will need to have

    Tasks

    Schedule

    Budget

    Costs

You know what you want in a home and you don't want a cookie-cutter house, but you've come up with a number of questions, such as...

How long will it take me to build?

What order do I do things in?

How do I keep up with all the sub-contractors?

How do I budget for this?

How do I know when my actual cost are over-running my budget?

  7. Find the land.Get a survey.Get a home plan and submit it to your local building department.Get the foundation dug.Get the basement poured.Get the framing crew.Install windows and exterior door.Get the electric, and plumbing done.Get your HVAC installed.Drywall and mud.Sand and prime.Trim out house and install cabinets.Paint, flooring, the fun never ends.
