What are the stipulations on charging a patient for skipping an appointment in New York State?

I know that some doctors offices charge when you don't keep an appointment, but I was just wondering what the actual law is on that. Does there need to be a reminder call first, in order for them to charge? If anyone knows of a website I can look these laws up on that would be great. Thank you!!

  1. There aren't laws covering it, unless it was so high that a court could find it totally unreasonable.  Usually doctors' charge a small fee or the cost of the entire appointment (what they would have charged for the appointment if you came in with no insurance).

Reminder calls are usually referred to as "courtesy calls" because it's a courtesy reminder, not a binding obligation.

When you go to the doctor for the first time, they often give you paperwork that spells out the fees for broken appointments and ask you to sign.  If you haven't signed an agreement, then it would be difficult for them to enforce the charge.

  2. its part of the process if you cannot make an appointment why can't you make a phone call?  You are costing the doctor money!  Everyone has a cell phone these days just make the call.  You should consider your doctor's point of view.  If you call he or she can fill in your slot with another patient.  IF you are a no show you deserve to be fined.

  3. It will say on your appt. card . Some say appts. have to be cancelled within 12 or 24 hours. Whether they charge you or not you will have to find out.
