I'm trying to put together a lesson plan for a 3 yr old class. How should I go about it? Do you generally do a lesson plan weekly or for the month?

  1. A short term plan weekly. but know what long term goals are. Use a calendar and mark on Monday what letter, number, theme you are going to teach that week.  You can do this at the beginning of the year, then each week make a plan for that week.

Most of the learning that takes place in a three year old class is thru play and interaction with others.  As you play with them talk about shapes, sizes , colors, and count objects. They will learn thru playing. Three year olds should not be expected to sit for long periods of time.

My plans would be for one letter, one number, a color, and a shape each week.  Concentrate on those.  Plan to spend 5 - 10 minutes at a time actually teaching.  Other plans would include things like taking a nature walk, art projects, dress up play,  songs, and drama time.

Children learn thru repetition, so plan on saying and teaching the same thing over and over.

No real detailed plans are needed and you should always be flexible.  For instance, 8:30 - 9:00 free play, restroom break, 9:15 - 9: 20 show letter, tell letter name, say sound, and show things that start with that letter,  9:20-9:30 songs and finger plays, 9:00- 10:00 group play, 10:00- 10: 20 morning snack, 10:20- 10:25 numbers--show number card, tell name of #, count that many objects. ....and so on...later in the afternoon,  repeat the morning lessons just as a review.

  2. I just sent you an e-mail. If you'll send me your e-mail address back, I'll send an Excel attachment with a weekly lesson plan form.

  3. See if you can do your lesson plan a month in advance since little ones are so unpredictable, it's good to have everything ready to go.

I do one of these each day as far as "lessons" go:

    Story

    Work table time

Lesson, song, calendar, pledge, number, color, letter review

    Craft

In between is snacks, lunch, naps, indoor/outdoor play, toys, etc.

    Physical play

  4. we go for a month but the theme doesn't have to last that long - normally three or four days for a theme.  We have done nursery rhymes, colors, Dr. Seuss, pets, fire safety, flowers, butterflies, snow, spring, etc.

  5. The long term plan-themes, visitors etc should be yearly.

Medium Term: The goals and targets ou want children to reach by end of term-beginning of the term

Short Term: weekly-what you're going to have out, activities youre going to do etc.

In England the 6 Areas of Learning for 3-5 year olds are: Personal, Social and Emotional, Communication LAnguage and Literacy, Physical Development, Mathematical Dev, Creative Dev, and Knowledge and Understandingof the world.

For 0-3's its strong child, skilful communicator, healthy child and competent learner.

Planning should allow for children's self-iniated play.

If ur making a real class plan you really should be trained or supervised by someone who is trained.

Look up NAtional Care Standards and OFSTED.
