  1. A 16 year old is either a Sophomore  or Junior.  It depends on when your birthday is.  If is in before December 31 you are a Junior, if after your area Sophomore.  A Sophomore is a person in the 10th grade, Junior is some one is 11th grade.  Other classes are 9th grade, Freshman, 12th grade are Seniors.

It depends on which school system you are in, and also which state.  I live in Maryland and here is what students have to do.

Service Learning n/a As rising sixth graders, students begin fullfilling service learning requirements as part of their regular program of study. Most students will meet the community service requirement through the curriculum.

    Completer Program Paths

In addition to accumulating the required number of credits, students must plan for one of the following options:.

Career Completer The student pursues a sequence of courses to develop skills in preparation for employment upon high school graduation.

Tech Prep Completer The student pursues a sequence of study beginning in high school and continuing through at least two years of post-secondary education.

University System of Maryland Completer The student pursues a sequence of courses in preparation for post-secondary education upon high school graduation. Minimum requirements include two years of the same foreign language or two credits in Advanced Technology courses, and Algebra ! or Applied Math I and II, Geometry, and Algebra II.

Dual Completer The student pursues a sequence of courses that fulfills both Career and University System of Maryland requirements.

Maryland State High School Assessment (HSA)

Students must take the Maryland State HSA tests in order to graduate from high school.

    Service Learning Requirement

State graduation requirements for students include a requirement in service learning. Service learning, which is integrated into existing courses, begins in grades 4 and 5. Middle schoolers complete 10 hours of service learning in each of the grades 6 through 8. At the high school level, students complete 40 hours of service learning as part of their American Government, English and science courses. A total of 75 hours is required.

    Hope this helps.
