  1. A few I can think of:

Asbestos has been largely replaced by glass wool or mineral wool as a material to pruduce fire-proof clothing.  Glass or mineral wool is produced by blowing air through a molten material, and drawing the fibres out; a bit like making candy floss.

Asbestos is no longer used for fibrous cement sheeting, but has been replaced by cellulose (vegetable matter) and other fibrous materials.

Coal, Oil, Natural gas being replaced by renewable energy sources.(not strictly minerals, though)

Cement (produced from limestone) being replaced by recycled concrete recovered from building demolition (suitable for lower-grade use only).

Copper being replaced by aliminium for high voltage electrical transmission lines. (with the advantage that aluminium is lighter, as well)
