I am currently working 16 hours a week and claiming working and child tax credits, now my son is at nursery I am able to work a bit more. There are no extra hours at work though so I am thinking of looking for an extra day or so somewhere else, has anyone been in this situation before or does anyone know the rules regarding benefits/tax credits/income tax in this situation.

I've also heard that if I go above the tax threshold or are working more than one job then I may even be worse off than I am now so I might as well not bother - is there any truth in this?

  1. You would not be worse off working two jobs - the tax would be the same as if you worked extra hours at your main job. You would, however, save on NIC's if you took a second job as the forst £104pw on each job is exempt from NIC.
