  1. First look at Liberty of the Seas.

    Then look at Grand Princess.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Princ...

On the bottom, you'll see this:

    World's Largest Passenger Ship

Click on Carnival Destiny and keep going back.  The ships get progressively smaller.

  2. Currently there are two that are tied for the biggest.  The first is the Freedom of the Seas which entered service in June 2006.  The second is Liberty of the Seas which entered service in May 2007.  A third one is being built.  It will start taking paying passengers in the spring of 2008.  It's name is the Independence of the Seas.  These three ships are around 158,300 GRT.  They are all owned by Royal Caribbean.

Next is the Queen Mary 2.  The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) is about 150,000 GRT and is owned by Cunard.  It entered service in January 2004.

The next five biggest ships are the Voyager class ships owned by Royal Caribbean.  They are all about 138,500 GRT.  Their names and the year they entered service are:

    1999 Voyager of the Seas

    2000 Explorer of the Seas

    2001 Adventurer of the Seas

    2002 Navigator of the Seas

    2003 Mariner of the Seas

Currently the next biggest ships are owned by Princess.  They are 116,000 GRT.  Their names and the year they entered service are:

    2004 Caribbean Princess

    2007 Emerald Princess

Above are eleven ships.  However, one of the ships has not entered service yet, so there you have your ten.

As you can see, in 1999 the biggest ship was the Voyager of the Seas.  In 2004 the biggest ship was the QM2.  In 2006 the biggest ship was the Freedom of the Seas.

Prior to 1999 the biggest ship was the Grand Princess, which entered service in 1998 and is 109,000 GRT.

Prior to the Grand Princess, the biggest ship was the Carnival Destiny, which entered service in 1996.  At 101,353 GRT it was the first ship to exceed 100,000 GRT.

GRT is Gross Registered Tons and is a space rating, not a weight rating.  One GRT is 100 cubic feet.

Another even bigger ship is being built by Royal Caribbean.  It is going to be about 220,000 GRT and is currently known as Genesis or Project Genesis.  It will enter service in 2009.
