I just got back from a fantastic vacation in Marbella. Here are some ideas:

Casco Antiguo (Old Quarter), Marbella

This old neighborhood is full of romance, with narrow, winding cobblestone streets: great for evening strolls.

Shopping is a favorite activity of tourists on vacation anywhere and people visiting Marbella are no exception. Puerto Banús

Without doubt the place to be seen. If you are famous then there is no risk of not getting caught by the Paparazzi. Good beach just to the east of the marina protected by a jetty. If you feel like treating yourself spend a day relaxing in the Marbella Club beach club.

Arrive early as the front line sun loungers go fast. Parking difficult.

Main Sights

Old town & Orange Square

Partially surrounded by the ruins of an old Arab wall with narrow white washed streets, old churches and squares, as well as lots of fascinating shops and boutiques at the heart of old town is Orange Square.

Bonsai Museum

An exquisite exhibit of bonsai trees which is open daily from 10 am to 13.30 and from 16.30 to 20.00. Located in Arroyo de la Represa Park.

This art gallery always has a good selection of work by local artists and is open from 19.00 to 22.00 hours. Located in José Palomo Square, s/n.

Roman Villa & Roman Baths

To the west of is the remains of the Roman Villa at Rio Verde. It is noted for its well preserved mosaics. The ruins of the roman bath houses are just a step from the beach at Guadalmina to the west of San Pedro.

Museum of Spanish Contemporary Engravings

This building was formerly the residential palace of the Mayor, Don Alonso de Bazán who later, in a generous will, donated it to the town to serve as a hospital for the poor. Today, the building carries out a noteworthy social service as a museum, as well as housing the offices of the Marbella Cultural Delegation. The museum is the first of its type in Spain and exhibits works by Picasso, Miró, Tapies, Chillida and several other famous painters.

Seafront promenade & beaches

The extensive promenade is ideal to experience and join the Spanish in the traditional "paseo". Flanked by pavement cafes, restaurants, this promenade is one of the most attractive on the Costa del Sol and has the added advantage of being within minutes of the centre of town.

Marbella Mosque

This beautiful temple overlooks the golden mile just to the west of the city centre. It was the the first mosque to be constructed since the re conquest in the fifteenth century.

Puerto Banus

Possibly the ultimate in coastal charisma. Puerto Banus marina is located just west of Marbella. This is the place to be pampered yacht side and ogle those fabulous luxury yachts while sipping a drink at one of the many open air restaurants and bars.

Flea & Antique Market

Saturday morning only

Next to the bullring of Puerto Banus is a great rambling flea market, a mini "Rastro" where you can find everything from a wooden elephant to a woolly jumper. Prices are good but you may need to haggle.

Parks & Gardens

Marbella prides is parks and gardens. Even the smallest open spaces have been carefully planted with beautiful flowers. Nagueles Park, Parque de las Medranas, Parque de la Constitucion, La Alameda, King Fahiad Gardens are the names of the larger parks and gardens.

Surrounding Scenery

The magnificent mountain known as "La Concha" (the shell) is part of a range that extends across the skyline to the village of Ojén. Take the road to Ojén and turn left into the beautiful park called Juanar, where the mountainside is covered in pine trees, pinsapos, walnut and olive trees, as well as wild orchids - and some wild animals, including Hispanic wild goats, eagles and Royal owls. At one of its highest points stands "El Mirador" where you can look down on one of the most spectacular views of Marbella and its surroundings.

Jill has given you a great answer on Marbella itself...

If you want to wander around the rest of the province...There is SELWO animal park in Estepona (west of Marbella) with wild animals in semi-liberty, if you enjoy animals, well worth seeing.

Gibraltar is within driving distance (west past Estepona) good for a half day visit.

In Malaga itself you have the Cathedral,  Gibralfaro fortress overlooking the town, the bullring, the Pablo Picasso Museum, and the center of town is worth a nice long walk.

If you are here in mid.august,you can enjoy the local fiestas...The fair lasts 10 days...the longest in Spain, and one of the most fun..If you like taking pix...the girls in andalusian costume are very colourful, worth your while to photograph.

If you like caves.drive to Nerja (east of Malaga) and visit the grottoes, then go down to the beach there and ask where the restaurant with the famous paellas is...

Drive up to Mijas Pueblo, it is the tourist attraction par excellence..The village has retained its andalusian charm and the views of the whole coastline are superb you can see all the way from Sierra Nevada (to the east) to the mountains in North Africa (to the south) and Gibraltar (to the west) ...

You can treat yourself to a "Burro-taxi" ride...the local transportation service!

When you drive back down, stop in Fuengirola, give yourself a walk along the beach promenade, and stop off at one of the beach reatuarants for a fantastic meal of fresh fish.

If you like rock formations, and historical sites drive to Antequera...where you have prehistoric dolmens, and EL TORCAL natural park for the rock formations.

If you want to go further...Based in Marbella you are about 190 kms. from Granada, 250 kms. from Sevilla, and you have Cordoba in between... All three cities worth visiting...(If you have to choose just one  Granada should top the list).

It would be a sin to be in Andalucía and not see Granada!

This is a very international and liberal part of Spain......

You could even visit the Mezquita in Marbella or the one in Fuengirola, the buddhist Stupa in Benalmádena Pueblo, or the hindu temple in Arroyo de La Miel. (this is just next to SELWO Marina, which has a lovely sea lion and dolphin show.

Besides La Cañada Mall in Marbella, you have

Myramar Center in Fuengirola excellent for shopping

and Centro Comercial LARIOS in Malaga.. .

Plus the EL CORTE INGLÉS department stores all along the coast (the best one, to my taste, is the one behind Puerto Banús).

I have probably forgotten some things, there is so much worth seeing here, that it is hard to remember everything...

But this should give you a fairly good idea...
