what are the things to look out for? What are the rules like a list of do's and don't? what are the things to keep in mind? Can anybody please share their life experience in a hotel in shanghai or a personal story with me? As a foreigner, what are some of the things to be beware of. By the way, a hotel room with two beds, a single bathroom and a television, is that a 3-star or a 4 star hotel?

I am a hotelier and I have stayed in Shanghai hotels for quite a few times.

You need to be more specific about the types of 'dos and don'ts'.  

You should take the regular precautions as you would in any other country that you would travel to (ie. use the safe deposit box to lock your passport and valuables, double lock your door, use peep hole and only open doors to those you know). Especially more so in China and less reputable hotels.

In Shanghai, you should be wary of women / men propositioning you for 'massage or extra services'.  They will come across as forceful and very pushy but you must walk away - fast!  Do not believe a word they tell you as they are only out to con you.  If you end up taking up on their offer and go to their establishment, you will coerced into paying ridiculous amounts of money for barely even a drink!  Remember, there is no such thing as a free meal!  

It is a bit difficult to judge a hotel's rating just by the description you gave as, even that, qualifies as 5-star.  There is no formal star rating in China but I find that hotels in China really vary in quality.  Do your homework on the Internet before you book.

3 and 4-star hotels have bathroom, tv, and two beds if you ask for a twin-bed room.

I think hotels in Shanghai have the same basic rules with those in other countries.

experience-- a friend once smoked in the room and the smoke alarm went off (this was not in a Shanghai hotel though).
