What are the thoughts on the name Barbie?

Question

Well my name is Barbie and no i was not named after the doll, my mom just said that she really liked it. I was teased as a child ("barbecue" being the main teaser) and i always dreaded that first day of school when my name would be called and everybody would look up to see who the h**l was named that...and then i could hear them all whispering. Now i am 19 and i love my name, now that MOST people are mature at my age... although 2 out of 3 times i hear the "Barbie Girl" chorus as i introduce myself to someone. Quite annoying.

I have never met anybody else who's name is Barbie (not including nicknames if their name is Barbara and their called Barbie). So i guess my question is what do you all think of the name... is it really that horrible? And would you think if you met someone with the name? Or have you already met someone?

Also, would you name your daughter Barbie, why or why not?

FYI i do not have a middle name.

Barbie is a cute name! I've never met anyone named Barbie, but my old daycare teacher's name was barb and we'd all call her Barbie. I wouldn't name my daughter Barbie, because it reminds me of Barbie Benton, one of Hue Hefner's girlfriends...But I still love the name.

I worked with a lady named Barbie.  That was her name too.  She was like forty-five, so I never heard anyone make fun of it.

I have all boys, but I would not name my child barbie.  It's cool you like it, it just doesn't sound like a name that 'grows up' to me.  Then you have the whole doll factor.  Barbie just doesn't sound like a name that could ever be taken seriously.  That's just my opinion.....prove them wrong!

The main thing is that you like it but of course don't expect to have a professional career as you'll never be taken seriously with a name like that but if that's not your plan anyway who cares? I think the name is really cute.

Just dont have a Boyfriend named Ken OKAY JK JK LOL!!

I like the name if you dislike it someday go by BB(B)ar(B)ie!!

Or even bie(bee) or how about Barb!! OKAY!!I like it!!

hey sweets. honestly, that d**n barbie girl song immediately popped into my mind lol!!! i think it's a cute name tho, really. i wouldn't have named my daughters barbie just because of the teasing they'd go through but hey, everyone gets teased about something eventually so whatever!!!

your mom sounds like a very cool, unique person by the way!! you can tell a lot about a person by what they name their children =)

I've never met anyone with that name. Hey--at least it's unique! But, no, I wouldn't name my daughter that because it's not my style of name. That doesn't mean I dislike it, it's a whole lot better than many names out there right now ;)

I wouldnt name my child that...when i hear someone is named barbie, the doll pops into my head right away.

Honestly I wouldn't name my child Barbie for the teasing.  I think its ok for a nickname but not for an actual name.  I knew a girl back in elementary school who was named Barbara but they always called her Barbie and she got teased alot.  I don't thinks its a horrible name I just think its to open for teasing opportunities.  But its good you've come to terms with you name and now love it.  I use to hate my name and now Iove it.  Just as long as you like it that's all that matters I think.

I know 2 people with the name, Barbie.

I personally think it's annoying. It just screams, "My mom couldn't think of anything on her own, so she stole it from a doll."

Personally, no offense to you, I think it's a pretty horrible name. I know others with the name. No, I would not ever think of naming my child this, I'm more into giving my kid a wholesome name that they aren't going to get teased about their whole life, one that is nice, and isn't out there....

Believe me, I have seen way worse.  I've met a girl named Easter, another named Xylyss, and a third named Damien....yes, a girl named Damien.  

My mom is a Barbara and lets people call her Barbie and she doesn't really get any c**p about it.  Then again, she's 43 and well past those years.

I don't really like Barbie as a full name; if I were going to use it on my daughter I would just call her Barbara and use Barbie or Barb as a nickname, so she would be more professional looking later on.  But it's not BAD....I've seen really stupid "nickname" full names like Kimmie, Lizzie, and Abby.  And no, I wouldn't automatically think of the dolls if I met someone named Barbie.
