  26. Which government?

In the U.S. we have the Executive, Judicial and Legislative Branches.

In the U.K. you have the Judiciary and Legislative (Parliament) with executive powers coming from a subset of the Legislature (Prime Minister).

In both countries, you could also add the general notion of governmental bureaucracy to the mix, since in some cases members therein operate outside of the other three branches (at least directly - in the U.S. this would include several departments and commissions, in the U.K. it would include several ministries.)

  27. You didn't specify what is the name of "our government", but most democratic republics and constitutional monarchies divide the work of government between three different types of officials.  In both the United States and the United Kingdom, for example, the three branches of government are the executive, legislative, and the judiciary.

In the UK, the Prime Minister and his or her cabinet exercise executive powers; the two chambers of Parliament, the House of Lords and the House of Commons, pass legislation, and the judiciary makes independent legal decisions.  In the US, the President functions as the CEO, the Congress and the Senate have legislative power, and the judiciary ideally acts independently of both the legislative and executive branches of government.

Of course, judicial decisions, legislative acts, or executive rulings sometimes over power this delicate balancing act.  For example, because President George W. Bush's appointments to the Justice Department since 2001 have controlled the appointing of federal judges, the executive branch has overly influenced the decisions of the American judiciary.
