  1. Three groups??? That's tough.....

    There's the Lesser Antilles &

    There's the Greater Antilles

    And then theres.

    The Windward Islands and

    The Leeward Islands.

You can also separate the countries as the

    English-speaking

    French-speaking

    Dutch-speaking &

    Spanish-speaking Caribbean too.

You have me stumped on 3 groups....

    Other than if you mean......

    * The Commonwealth of Nations

    * Francophonie, (Organisation Internationale de la)

    * Latin Union

  2. The Caribbean islands are separated from the Atlantic Ocean by three main island groups:

    Bahamas (to the north)

The Bahamas consist of over 3,000 individual islands and reefs.

The most popular of these islands are Nassau and Freeport.

    Greater Antilles (centrally)

    Cuba

    Jamaica

    Puerto Rico

    Hispaniola

Haiti (occupies roughly 1/3 of the island)

    Dominican Republic (occupies the balance)

Lesser Antilles (southeast) – divided into two groups

    Leeward Island

    Antigua and Barbuda

    St. Kitts and Nevis

British Virgin Islands – about 50 (mostly uninhabited)

    Anegada

    Tortola

    Virgin Gorda

    Anguilla

    Montserrat

    Windward Islands

    Dominica

    St. Lucia

    St. Vincent and the Grenadines

    Grenada

    Barbados

  3. Caribbean Islands are actually divided into two groups known as

    The Greater Antilles:

    Jamaica

    Cuba

    Dominican Republic

    Haiti

    Puerto Rico.

NB The Cayman Islands are also often included in the Greater Antilles because of their geographical proximity.

The second is the Lesser Antilles:

U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix

British Virgin Islands: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van d**e

    Anguilla (UK)

    Saint Martin/Sint Maarten

    Saint-Barthélemy

    Saba

    Sint Eustatius

    Saint Kitts

    Nevis

    Barbuda

    Antigua

    Redonda

    Montserrat (UK)

    Guadeloupe

    La Désirade (Fr.)

    Les Saintes (Fr.)

    Marie-Galante (Fr.)

    Dominica

    Windward Islands:

    Martinique (Fr.)

    Saint Lucia

    Saint Vincent

    Barbados

    Grenadines

    Grenada

    Trinidad and Tobago

    Leeward Antilles

    Aruba

    Curaçao

    Bonaire

    Venezuelan archipelago

NB The difference between The Greater Antilles and the Lesser Antilles is that the greater is made up of continental rock, distinct from the Lesser, which are mostly young volcanic or coral islands.
