    If you are speaking about Homo sapien as opposed to the hominid  line that lead to us, then keep reading.

    We began in Africa and with Homo erectus spread out into Asia and Europe. Homo e was replaced by Homo sapien and he in turn by ourselves Homo sapien sapien. The "how" Homo sapien emerged is the subject of two theories (explanations)

    Out of Africa states that Homo sapien evolved there and then spread across the globe. It has been called an "make love or make war" theory as it requires Home erectus to go extinct through being out breed or being killed off.

    The Multi-regional theory has Homo sapien arising in several locations and due to travel and contacts joining together as one species.

    Control of fire/use of clothing.

    Standing upright, which frees our hands to carry things.

    All within the past 2 million years or so!
