  1. The small hole on the camshaft gear (the upper large gear) is the timing mark for the camshaft gear.  There is a small "punched" dot next to one of the sprockets of the crankshaft gear.  When the crankshaft gear is installed correctly, this small dot should be easily visible from the right wheel well side of the engine (with the timing chain cover removed).  Simply "line up" the hole in the camshaft gear where it faces toward the "dot" mark on the crankshaft gear.  If you were to draw an imaginary line intersecting the centers of both gears, these two marks would also intersect that line and would be on the imaginary line between the two gear centers.

If you have saved the old crankshaft gear sprocket, you can slide it on the end of the shaft (after the new crankshaft gear has been installed) and use a pipe wrench to rotate the crankshaft clockwise until you have aligned the dot mark.  After this, you can simply remove the old sprocket.  You wouldn't want to turn the new sprocket with a pipewrench as this might chew up the ends of the sprockets.  To make more sense about the timing mark alignments,
here is a small "typographic" diagram:

    O-  -O

The left "O" in the diagram represents the camshaft gear while the "O" on the right represents the crankshaft gear.  The "dashes (-) show that the "timing marks" (as described above) are to be facing each other --- in line with the gear centers.
