Hi everyone,

We are going to be traveling from Bologna to Pisa for 5 days in January - with lots of sightseeing along the way in different cities and towns (we are renting a car). We have all the regular guidebooks, but I would like to know your Top 10 recommendations inTuscany. It's very nice to have personal suggestions.

Thank you!

  1. I'm born (and I'm still living) in Tuscany in the between of Pisa and Florence. As first I must say that 5 days will allow you to see just a small part of all the things of my region.

Here in Tuscany we have really a lot of cities and sites that no any other Italian region can say to have in their own surrounds.

Just to be concise we have the seasides and the islands, the rivers and the lakes, the mountains and the hills, the woods, and the green is wherever, even in the towns. We have a lot of wonderful medieval cities ( Florence, Pise, Siena, Lucca, Arezzo, etc.) and small towns (San Gimignano, Pienza, Chiusi, Volterra ,etc.) Our history is full with artists as Dante, Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, etc.,

Last but not least everywhere in Tuscany you can taste good food (the renowned bistecca alla fiorentina,la ribollita,la trippa,la fettunta,i crostini toscani,i salumi di cinta senese,il cinghiale ecc.)and good wines (our Brunello and our Chianti Classico are famous all over the world but we have a lot of our wines same as good but less wellknown and less expensive -just to recall one of them take note of Morellino di Scnsano).Wherever you go (but I highly recommend to avoid the top class restaurants and chose instead among a lot of small sites  called "trattoria toscana") or shortly just "trattoria") you can eat and drink as you were staying  on heaven....!!!

Should this be not enough for you I suggest you to click on my profile and read my answers concerning Italy (I've posted a lot of them and some are concerning Tuscany and Florence  in particular). I feel confident you'lll find really a lot of additional infos.

Among previous answers I've seen sites that are located outside of Tuscany. This would confuse you since I repeat you would have not time enough to look at all. However I'm sure having forgotten something since we have so many things that's impossible to recall of them. For any failure I'm giving you 2 links with rather good infos.

However when you'll be here I'm sure you wouldn't leave back.

  3. Go to Fiesole there are Etruscan and Roman ruins.  Fiesole is about 30 minuets from Florence by bus.  It is really pretty there as well.

  4. Here I am directly from Italy.Actually I live near Venice but I know Tuscany too.

Well, first of all let me say that in January, being winter time, the weather might be not so good.It rather cold but it really depends on each single year.I just recommend visiting Florence,Siena and Lucca. There are then plenty of smaller towns you could find interesting but in five days I guess these are the best to visit.

Enjoy your time here in Italy!!

  5. OH MY GOD!!! IM SO ENVIOUS

ok, i went to Tuscany summer of 2005. Its amazing.

    1) You need to go to Orvieto to see the most awesome Cathedral. its really beautiful, and the whole town itself is really great, built in a material unique to it (tuffuto or something, i forget the name).

    2) Castilgion Foirentino is like one of those fairytale castles from a distance. Its a nice stopover point in your travels, to have a quiet day in a beautiful area.

    3) San Giminiano is like a medieval Manhatten. It has 11 towers within castle walls. Originally there were 85. It has an assortment of art galleries and museums. It is also the place to go to buy jewlery.

4)Chusi (not sure how to spell that prenounced Quci). This place is great for etruscan monuments. Another quiet town.

    5) YOU MUST GO TO ASSISI!!!! NO EXCUSES thats the town of St Francesco. It has a number of Cathedrals, art galleries, museums. A good night life. Good place to go.

    6) Go to Arezzo is a pretty cool place to go having a wide variety of activities.

7)Florence is a must. end of story. Santa Maria Del Fiore (Brunalleschi's cathedral). Many many other things to see there.

    8) there is another town/city called Luca. i didnt like it because it needs time to see, i didnt have time when i went. If you have time, go. It has this really cool tower with for full grown trees at the top!! its bizzare, it has many other things to see, and a pretty good highstreet if you wanna go shopping.

9)Sienna is a nice place to go as well. It has one of the world's most famous Piazza's, a great Cathedral (though when i went entry was overpriced since they were repairing it. That pissed me off.)

10)Venice and Rome if you have time or wanna go to the big cities.

FOOD: PIZZA PIZZA PIZZA there is this place in Castiligion Fiorentino that makes the best pizza i ever had in my life. Its called La Pizzetta. You find it at the top of these stairs in the hill/mountain. Its not easy to find. But if you find it, you wont regret. There is another place under the arches infront of the Mayor's office.
