  7. In chronological order:

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930) – Based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque about a gung-ho German soldier in World War I, this film is the timeless classic of the anti-war genre.

Young idealistic German volunteers go to the front to serve the Fatherland become disillusioned and ravaged by their experiences. Shows the everyday reality of trench warfare with it's mind-breaking, starvation and butchery.

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (1966, French & Arabic) – based on events during the 1954-1962 Algerian War against French rule. So realistic, many think it is a documentary.

BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957) –  David Lean's acclaimed, all-time great, award-winning, widescreen WWII epic drama about British P.O.W.s forced to construct a railway bridge in jungle of Burma. Tells the story of a clash of wills between two fanatical military leaders. British commander Col. Nicholson (Alec Guinness), constructs a rail bridge - and unwittingly aid the war effort of their Japanese captors and the camp commander Col. Saito (Sessue Hayakawa). A tremendously antagonistic battle of wills ensued between the two Colonels. Nicholson supervises the bridge's construction with a twisted sense of pride to show up the Japanese as inferior. Based on the novel by French writer Pierre Boulle (author of Planet of the Apes).

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) – David Lean (again). One of the greatest films of all time. Set in the immense Arabian Desert, this sweeping, cinematic biographical epic, winner of Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, followed the true-life exploits of a famed British officer, T. E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole in his first major film), and his transformation from an enigmatic eccentric to a hero in WWI Arabia. Assigned there, he courageously united the warring Arab fractions into a guerrilla front to battle the Turks, Germany's allies. Beautiful cinematography.

APOCALYPSE NOW (1979) – Loosely based on Joseph Conrad's 1911 novel Heart of Darkness. Considered by many to be the best war movie of all time. Sweeping, surreal, still-controversial Vietnam war epic. An American military assassin, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen), is sent upriver on a patrol boat into Cambodia to 'terminate without prejudice' a, renegade Special Forces colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has become an insane demi-god who now run his own private army deep in the jungle.

DAS BOOT (1981) – A German U-boat captain (Jurgen Prochnow), known as der Alte ("the Old Man") and its crew, during the early years of WWII, patrol the Atlantic and Mediterranean in the claustrophic, cramped confines of their submarine. Harrowing and tense film.

GALLIPOLI (1981) – Set during WWI - a rich character study of two idealistic best friends in the Australian army (one played by a very young Mel Gibson) who would vainly fight the German-allied Turks at Gallipoli in 1915.

RAN (1985) – Akira Kurosawa's last masterpiece. A loose adaptation of the story of Shakespeare's tragedy King Lear, set in feudal Japan. A greedy aging warlord divides his land and power to his three sons, war brakes out as his sons take after their father in an attempt to take it all for themselves. Amazing battle scenes. A favorite film of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola.

THREE KINGS (1990) – A a surreal, almost hallucinatory state of being. Set in Iraq just after the Gulf War has ended, three soldiers discover a bunker stolen gold and treasure from Kuwait, but their dreams of wealth are set aside when they discover a population in need. George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube star in this subversive drama. A mix of parts M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998) – Steven Spielberg. Begins with the brutal, uncompromising, and graphic depiction of the landing at bloody Omaha Beach on D-Day (June 6, 1944). The film's aftermath, based loosely on a true story, revolves a mission to round up Pvt. James Ryan, whose three brothers have recently been killed in action, by a group commanded by veteran Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks).
