  1. Top 5 Do-NOTs:

    1) No persistence. Most blogs are abandoned within 3 months of starting. Don't let yours end up on the Information Super Highway's roadkill pile.

    2) No regularity. Blogs should be updated at least once a week, even if it's just to let the readers know you're still alive. And you could at least find some related news to link to and post on, even if you don't have anything FRESH to add.

    3) No originality. Most blogs are just too general and tries to cover too much. Do we really need another game review site? Movie review site? _______ fan site? And so on?

    4) Too original: some blogs are just TOO specific and esoteric, only the blog writer, maybe his/her SO, and a few close friends have read it, oh, and maybe his/her mama. Do you really want to read a blog on nothing but smilodons?

    5) link AWAY --  If all you do is link to someone else's news items, you're giving the hits to someone else.  Link internally, add original content, etc. Keep the links internal if you can!

    Top 5 Do's

    1) Stay the course -- set it in your schedule, every few days: make entry in blog. You'll think of something when it's time.

    2) Do add cross-links, outside links, and pictures -- makes your blog look far less "stale" than words only. Flickr has a TON of free pics.

    3) Pick the right topic to start -- the topic must be big enough to allow you to add specific 'tags', yet small enough so that it's not covered to death by everybody else.

    4) Be professional, unless you're going for effect -- plain words are usually more powerful, unless you're writing in "persona", like "Southern General" or "British Au Pair".

    5) Have fun -- Blog is supposed to get you into the habit of writing. The more you write, the better you will write. It helps with all aspects of your overall writing, not just keyboarding.
