  1. Mac is an operating system.

  2. erm. as the poster above pointed out, Apple make both Macs & the operating systems they run.

Most Macs will be running some version of MacOSX. The most recent is 10.5 (aka Leopard)

Because of the build quality (& 'cos they were way ahead of their time with things like networking designed in), a small minority will be running older OSs such as OS9, 8 or even older. I'm typing this on a 6200 circa 1995 running OS 7.5 that feels as zippy as the PC next to me I bought last year.

I admit it's not a computer I use all the time- it's main job is downloading ('cos I'd like to see the virus that could infect it!) & watching TV on.

As an example of Apple being way ahead at the time- the TV function came built in, complete with remote and the IR receiver for the remote built in the case. I can even turn the computer on/off with the remote. This was over thirteen years ago and, apart from the PRAM battery, it still works.

Back to your question- I'm pretty sure you'll find some people running linux on Macs.

There used to be a version of BeOS that ran on a Mac.

In the late 90s, Apple released a couple of Macs with secondary PC motherboards, allowing them to run Win95. Nowadays it's possible to run XP/Vista via emulation, but I don't know anyone who does.

  3. All Mac computers come with OSX. OSX was an operating system made for macs by Apple. You can run Windows on top of a mac system if you want.

If your looking to buy a mac you can only buy one with OSX from apple.
