I cannot find any information on the rankings of each department. I know a lot about the UC's but little about any other schools. Especially private universities.

  1. There is no currently reliable ranking available that is not biased by one method or another.  Based upon professional journal articles, private schools usually do not have the resources to do more than introduce their students to the field.  The authors of the currently used textbooks all come from the top public universities.

If you are seriously interested in cultural anthropology then check out the web site maintained by the University of Delaware listed below.  It has links to a list of the top schools and study centers and should help you narrow down your choices.

Where you get you degree from does matter if you plan on continuing your education.  A degree from a top school will carry more weight when you apply for graduate training.

  2. You shouldn't pick an undergraduate college or university based on its program in one particular department. You should look for a school that has solid programs across the disciplines. While you might start your undergraduate education convinced that you want to study a particular discipline, it will likely change.

Apply to and attend the best college for you. Find a school with a strong academic program and a social climate that will meet your needs.

    That's my advice.

Anyway, the schools in the US that are best known for their anthropology departments often make poor places to study as an undergrad because all of the focus is on developing graduate student's research.

    Good luck!!
