My favorites are :

London Eye---worth the ticket

Tower of London

Westminster Abbey

British Museum

Just outside of London,   Windsor Castle

Covent Garden, in my opinion is just another shopping area even though you can catch some good street acts in the area.

Also in my particular case and because I looooove music!!! Virgin Megastore in Oxford street you can spend there half day discovering great cds , dvds , magazines , etc. they have also a nice cafeteria with delicious muffins or bagettes

You would need to at least see Hyde Park, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the Tower of London & Tower Bridge.  Anything else would be a bonus :-)

The London eye

Tate gallery, and Tate modern.

Piccadilly circus

Trafalgar square

Kensington Palace

All the museums, particularly the natural history.

Duck tours, (an amphibius craft that travels up the thames, & around London) Pick up point next to the London eye.

London Zoo

HMS Belfast

Greenwich maritime museum

And now the Gherkin building @ Number 30 St mary axe, very popular.

If you`ve only got a limited time, one of the open top tour buses is a good way of seeing the main sights and getting some good photographs.You can get off to look around places and then catch the next bus to continue the tour.Saves you a lot of time trying to find your own way round if you don`t know London.
