  1. There is a similarity of the regional costumes in Le Pays Basque in France and el Pais Vasco in Spain... The BERET is typical of these regions, and originated in Le Pays Basque. It exists in many colours, but those mainly used are the black and the red ones.

Basque men usually wore a short jacket, of a dark colour, in a velvet or corduroy cloth (though sometimes other fabrics were also used). Dark trousers, in a matching fabric. A red or black cummerbund, and espadrilles on their feet. The spanish basque also use a costume in white...long sleeved shirt, white trousers and red cummerbund with black or red beret.  (similar to the one used in the running of the bulls during the "San Fermines" in Pamplona, Spain).

There is also the Xamara, a typical blouse in black fabric worn by the men.

The womens costumes are varied, usually a long skirt, white stockings, espadrilles, an apron in contrasting colour, and a white headscarf, knotted above the forehead, and sometimes an embroidered or plain shawl.

Basque country is an area of mountains and shepherds, the shepherds wear knee length trousers and white stockings the top being similar to the other costumes with jacket...

It is also a region with wonderful coastal areas, and fishermen.

The seafood in that region is one of the most wonderful products. There are also excellent cheeses (made from ewes milk or ewe/cows milk mixed).

A paprika called piment de Espelette...

A thin sausage called Txistorra, excellent for a barbecue...

Also there are still many things handcrafted, such as the beret (calle "Boina" in Spain), the makhila, (cane used by the shepherds), and the typical linen cloth, with a design of seven stripes, that represent each of the seven provinces...and may be repeated, used in  many ways, from a sheetsize covering to keep the animals out of the sun, to kitchen towels, tablecloths, etc., to the extra fine linen used for shirts
