Four female students planning on going on holiday there on September 1st for 5 nights (maybe less).

What methods of transport can you use?

What are they like?

How much are they?

Can you get any special tourist/.visitor type cards to get around Edinburgh cheaper?

We'd be staying in the Edinburgh Central youth hostel.

  1. I live south of the city center near the Meadows, and I walk everywhere. Edinburgh is a very pedestrian friendly city. Where you're located you can get anywhere you'd want to be by walking. Just grab a city map, it's easy to get around! You'll be just northeast up Leith Walk from Princes Street, Old town, the castle, and anything else you'd want to see. If you go to out at night and don't want to walk back late, it won't cost more than 5-8 quid for a taxi.

  2. Edinburgh's a very walkable city.  Most of the places you'll probably want to see are in the city centre, so bring a pair of good walking shoes, an umbrella and a map.  If you want to go a little further afield, a day ticket for Lothian buses is £2.50, or single tickets are £1.10.  There are taxis, of course, but Edinburgh's not a city that was designed to be driven in.  Plus, you miss some of the experience if you're just sitting in a car.

Central Youth Hostel actually isn't the most central hostel, so you may want to consider cabbing it to Princes Street, if you're planning a big day.  It's probably about a 10 - 15 minute walk from CYH to Princes Street / North Bridge, which is where the touristy area sort of begins.

  3. Here is a link to a great FREE travel website called Virtual Tourist.

You do have to sign up if you want to contact people and ask questions.  But there seems to be a lot of input from people who live in Edinburgh and have traveled there.  You should be able to find your answers there.

I would also suggest contacting the hostel that you're staying at.  I have found that the people at the hostels are more than happy to offer information and answer your questions.  Best of luck and have a great time!  Happy and safe travels!

  4. At the moment buses are the only means of public transport in and around Edinburgh. You can buy a single ticket for £1.10 - one journey any distance or a day ticket £2.50 - unlimited travel for one day (not valid on tours, night buses and Airlink.)

There are, of course, fast blacks, taxis, the most expensive in the UK, apart from London.

There are various city tour buses for a sightseeing tour of the city, you can hop on and off, if you see anything that interests you.
