  1. two stages?  by the second part of yur question I get the feeling like your wondering about the naming of a plant?

well the scientific name of any species (plant, animal, fungi...) uses bionomial nomenclature invented by Linneaus way back when...

The language is latin and the name of a species is consists of two words.  The first one is the Genera name (like homo for the hominid genera that monkeys and humans belong to).  The second word is the species name (like sapiens for humans).

When typing a scientific name you want to be sure to italicize the words.  If your writing it by hand you want to underline it.

Sometimes a brand new species is found in which case the discover has a choice of naming it based on a characterisitc usually or by what ever he wants (like his own name in latin)

hope thats what you were looking for...
