My parents switched me over to High School Concert Band this year, and I haven't played since eighth grade (I'm a sophomore this year). I played the Trumpet from 6th-8th grade, and picked up the French Horn in 7th grade and also played that. I'm a little worried that I'll make a fool of myself since I took a year off. What are the expectations for people entering concert band, and how good are you expected to be?

  1. it might be a little intimidating at first, but basically just try extra hard. it's really not going to be as difficult as you think it will.

  2. AAH the memories...

I played French Horn from 6th -12th grade, in college (it was the Mellophone during Concert Band season) and for a short time in the military (USAF). Expectations will vary from director to director. Assuming from your question you are attending a regular high school and not one of the Performing Arts, you will be expected to know how to play the scale. You will be expected to know where the notes lie on the scale as well as the parts of the musical scale itself. Depending on the instructor, you may learn or need to know half note and dotted notes. Most teens have band directors who are just teachers, my band director was a working musician so I beleive we experienced a unique type of music training because of it. (He appeared in THE COLOR PURPLE my senior year) Don't worry, one year away from band won't put you as far behind as you think, however, it won't hurt to go over any of the notes you may still have from eighth grade. Remember, your band director is a teacher, so they will teach you anything they feel you need to know. Have fun with it and have a great school year! Good luck!

  3. it really depends on the school

at my school concert band basically consists of going to sections once a week (band is a class so we play during school every day too)

we have try outs for spots if you don't have try outs you will be placed according to year level

i don't think your making a fool of yourself you can practice and not playing for one year isn't that bad

just start getting yourself familiar with your instrument again by working on scales and things
