Regarding the upcoming US election ?

How do you see the discussion of BOTH sides on Yahoo answers ( ie is one side more rational to you than the other )

Do you have an interest in the elections because you believe that whoever THEY elect, in reality, more or less becomes the *leader* of the western world ( whether we like it or not)

(and if the american people want to .. they can give their views on whether or not they believe we outsiders should have any interest )

  1. The choice of running mates is equally as interesting as the candidates. In the current climate I don't believe that Americans will want to rock the boat and we are more likely to see President McCain than President Obama. So we are probably looking at Bush II the sequel.

  2. I am interested to see if America will see past Obamas colour so I can watch history be made also I disliked Howard so much I want to see Bush's party defeated.

I think Americans are sick of being the leaders of the free world and would like their people to be the main objective in the election a bit like Australia was in ours.

I think both sides can get a bit carried away but those fundamental Christians scare me just as much as those fundamental Muslims

  3. I live in the U.S. . . . this is the first election that I can remember where international opinion of the candidate was actually an election issue . . . we have polls from France, the U.K., Russia, Israel . . .

That said, it's a bit tricky for us . . . obviously we are electing a leader for the U.S. first . . . and opinion polls effect foreign relations so the outside world is really considering the Secretary of State position (not President) . . . I don't think the rest of the world understands that and I'm afraid they'll be disappointed with whomever we pick . . .

The U.S. is clearly damned if we do and damned if we don't.

  4. All that "leader of the western world" stuff is just propaganda. You Aussies do just fine on your own.Another posted g*y marriage and other stuff as "progress". That's opinion.

"Interest" as in fun to watch-maybe.

  5. I find the bulk of the questions here just embarrassing.  There seems to be little to no serious political debate, just mindless mudslinging and insults.

If I had to choose between the two I would pick Obama, though Im not hugely keen about him.

But, no, they do not become leader of the western world.  Thats just in american imagination.  As proof of that, simply observe that the rest of the western world is consistently ahead of the US on basic human rights (equal rights, same s*x marriage, death penalty, torture camps). You really cannot be a leader when you are behind everyone else.

  6. Personally, now that Obama is 'official', I see some of the glamour wearing off, and reality setting in.

However, McCain's choice of running mate seems very odd. From what I can see, it looks like trying to capture the disgruntled Clinton voters, but if so, he has missed the point very much. Clinton represented a type of political belief the inexperienced but right wing Palin does not.

So, I guess the Americans who have said he's trying to secure the fundamentalist, anti-everything except their own narrow beliefs voters.

On the surface, that does seem 'more of the same' as Bush.

    Time will tell, I guess.

    Cheers :-)

  7. What election? lol  It`s all over internet so it`s hard to avoid, but I don`t I care much about since it will not affect me anything. & as 1 previous poster wrote. `it`s laughable to say that the american president will be leader of the free world`. That`s certainly only in the minds of the americans. Non-americans don`t think that.

  8. as an american i find it ironic that they complained about gore getting contributions from the Chinese when bush and d**k has made us bankrupt with our borrowing money from the chinese to buy oil from the terrorist arabs,
