  1. dont drown, bit obv

  2. You got to float on you back in full combat gear and jump off a platform swim qual las 1 week

  3. You must float. It is required for delivery into battle on a tin can.

  4. Depends on your MOS. There are 4 basic levels Swim Qualification 1,2,3,4, or SQ1, SQ2, SQ3 or SQ4 for short. 4 is the least demanding and 1 is the most out of that group. Don't remember what 4 is exactly but if you can swim outside the kiddie pool then you can pass it. 3 is more in depth but fairly simple still. 2 you start dealing with swimming with gear. One thing is to swim about 50m with your gear on, harder than it sounds since your gear floats by itself. 1 is where the fun stuff is. One of the drills is to come up to someone who is "panicking" and they will attack you by dragging you underwater. Hit a pressure point on the arm and then you have the pleasure of dragging them back to "shore" which happens to be the end of the pools 25 meters away.

After boot there's schools for higher levels but those are optional. Also the swim quals expire after a time so depending on your level and the time you are in you may have to requal. SQ1 is 4 years, SQ3 is 3 and so on.
