Myers says that when he talks to young people about Monster, their responses are interesting: “When I ask them, ‘So what’s the story with Steve?’ they come up with various answers about his legal guilt, but eventually some kid does say that whether Steve’s legally guilty or innocent doesn’t make any difference; he is guilty.  And to me, that’s the essence of the book.
