Question:

What are these cities in Germany called?

I am translating a Russian movie for my husband and one of the characters mentions two German cities/towns that I can't quite catch. It sounds like "Shvarthvanburghouse" and "Grunetsveenberg" (I am sorry if I butcher them - you can guess I am not German). Could someone tell me what exactly they are called and (obviously) how these names are spelled? Thank you in advance!!!

  1. I am going to give you some links to what they could possibly be. But, maybe you could also check Wikipedia for cities in Germany. You have to remember that even though they sound phonetically like the way you spelled them, they are spelled very differently. For example, in German, the 'v' sound comes from the letter 'w'.

  2. Sorry I can't help you with the exact cities.

Even though you asked me not to, I've provided a list of German cities.  I couldn't find your cities on there.  Maybe you could find something:

Note that "house" would be spelled "haus," "shvart" would be spelled "schwart"

  3. Hi Almatinka,

those characters sound awesome, causing ear-pain if trying to figure it out. For the second one, no chance, maybe you can give some other "sound like" samples.

The first one, being on the "Cranger Kirmes", one of the biggest funfairs in western Germany, sounds like "Schwarzach-Burghausen" to me, which is a small village in Germany, county Bavaria, district Lower Bavarian, between Regensburg and Deggendorf. But that may change when sobering up.

    Cheers!

Edit: Would be especially helpfull, if you could tell if it's a single name or a double one, and where it is splitted.

  4. no idea.. more info?

  5. There are several places called Schwarzenberg or Schwarzenburg, but I don't know something like this with "---haus". There is also a town in Bavaria called Burghausen, but there is no "Schwarzen..." before this.

I heard of places called Gunzenbach or Gunzenreith in Germany and a Gunzenberg in Austria.

As you say it is a Russion movie it is possible that the G is in fact no G but an H. The Russions have their trouble pronouncing an H and often use G instead.

But there is no way to tell if this is what you mean.

Anyway, your "Shwart.." may be "Schwart..." or "Schwarz...", your "...burg..." may be "...burg..." or "...berg...", your "..house" may be "...haus" or "...hausen", your "...tsveen..." may be "...zen...".

  6. You butchered them so bad there is no way i could try and figure it out and I'm living in Germany!
