1.) My Quarter Horse mare is a black bay, but is bleaching out and have a brindle look to her.

This is what a brindle horse looks like :http://www.gotpetsonline.com/pictures-gallery/horse-pictures-breeders-foals/brindle-pictures-breeders-foals/pictures/brindle-0001.jpg

My horse is only doing this on her left thigh though. Here are pictures of her thigh, they are kinda hard to see, look closely:

  1. Love Sunny's dapples...and I agree with the coloring.  Too bad she is so fuzzy...those dapples would look so pretty on a slick coat!!

Can't quite get the picture of your mare though...maybe take the picture from further away??

  2. Does your QH mare have a dorsal stripe? there is such thing as a brindle dun but the stripes run vertical. From what I can make out in your picture your mare's are horizontal. I had a red dun who has what is called leg barring but it looks like tiger stripes on her legs and on one of her withers. good luck in your color quest.

  3. Don't worry about the bleaching, We have black-born Friesians that turn Roan-ish in the sun. It's totally normal, Its just like when blonde hair turns more blonde in the summer.

As for the palomino pinto, i think it looks like a palomino pinto.

  4. The palomino paint seems right there is a lil dapple to her .... she is cute

  5. nice Mini xD we have a "palomino pinto" broodmare (also Miniature Horse)but I seriously think she is a chestnut pinto...but after we clipped her she looks roan/palomino/chestnut...whatever she si it is pretty lol xD

  6. That's kinda wierd that she is bleaching out like that.

i don't know anything about that, but the new horse "Sunny" is definitely a palomino pinto.

    Sunny is very pretty.

    Well, I hope I helped.

  7. I have never personally seen a brindle horse, but I understand it has something to do with dun genes.

You say the mare exhibits horizontal stripes at the tops of her thighs?  (Gaskin)

The dun gene, at it's most evident, creates a "dun factor" - the stronger the gene, the stronger the factor.

I have a dun factor filly - she's got a strong dorsal stripe, black tips on her ears,  bay legs and at the top of the bay legs where the color melds into the butterscotch body color, she has stripes horizontally.  This is evidence of a true dun factor color.

I suspect this might be what you're seeing?  Do you want it to show or not?

Often, people I talk to who have issues with their dark or bay horse bleaching out in the sun feed a product called "Black as Knight" which is an all-natural supplement which increases the coat's oil content which moisturizes the hair and disallows such drying out and bleaching from the sun.  Perhaps trying some of that will enhance her dark coat color?

My dun filly is out of a bay TB mare - I have another mare from the same mother.  Both the mother and the other mare, in the summer time, shed out real slick.  They look like typical bay horses but it appears like someone is shining a bright yellow light under their bellies - they have a rich, almost golden color along their undersides while their topsides carry shades of black - like the shadows of the light shown from below.  The youinger mare also shows some dapples a bit in her coat in the summer - it's not all that evident unless I draw your attention to it, then you go "that's neat!".

The palomino mini is really cute too!

    Have fun!

  8. I Love Sunny! I wish I could get a 16hh QH in his color!
